There is a great challenge in painting an object directly from
life. A sense of immediacy is felt as you render patterns of light
and shadow. The problem faced in painting an object directly from
life is determining effects of light passing over it. Developing the
ability to see these patterns is essential to creating an
interesting expression. We will cover: the painting of lost and
found edges, rendering, and treatments of backgrounds. Learning to
see and paint these tonal relationships are what we are after. For

In this class you will make paintings using your sketches,
photographs from nature, and memory. It is essential to begin
interpreting from memory/experience to express something interesting
and compelling about your subject. Using these methods you will
arrive at a mine-able sense of abstraction. While guiding you
through these concepts, we will work out technical problems as they
